subject: Fx-140 Modular Helmet Review [print this page]

It's not uncommon for street riders to have two helmets, and open-faced model for hot weather or for riding around town, and a full-face for touring and sport riding. The problem is that sometimes they start the ride in one type of helmet and by the end of it are wishing they had brought the other. The new FX-140 from AFX combines the best of both of these types of helmets in one modular design.

Conventional modular helmets have flip-up chin bars that let you feel the wind in your face if you choose, but their design means the chin bar sticks almost straight up when fully open. As a result it can catch the wind and strain your neck, as well as let in dirt and bugs that can smear the inside of the face shield. But unlike other modular helmets, the chin bar on the FX-140 can be rotated 180 degrees to the rear, so it aligns with the back of the helmet. This means that when you're in open-face mode, the chin bar is completely out of the way.

In addition to the innovative chin bar design, you'll find the same quality materials and construction that make AFX helmets among the best you can buy. The composite poly-alloy shell is lightweight and super-strong, and provides they first line of defense against impacts. The shell's finish is clear-coated to protect the paint, which is available in a range of solid colors including hi-vis yellow and safety orange for maximum conspicuity on the street.

Inside the FX-140 is a hypoallergenic and anti-microbial nylon liner with washable and removable cheek pads. In addition to the fully retractable chin bar, there's an inner flip-down sunshield that lets you ride without sunglasses, and allows yo9u to go safely from bright sunlight into tunnels and shady areas without loss of visibility-just flip the sunscreen up and down as needed.

Because an increasing number of riders choose to listen to music or use communication systems to talk to their passengers when they ride, the FX-140 comes with roomy ear cavities that accommodate speakers. To keep the inside of the helmet cool on hot days, there's a six-point ventilation system, with vents on the chin bar, the forehead area, the rear of the helmet, and the top.

The face shield is optically correct, compound-curved, and scratch resistant, and has a locking tab for secure closure; the shield also protects against UV rays. The cam buckle-style quick-release retention strap is adjustable for a perfect fit.
