FOUNDATION:

The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1582 as an internationally renowned centre for teaching and research in Edinburgh. It was the fourth university to be established in Scotland, hence making it one of the ancient universities of the United Kingdom. The University of Edinburgh is placed amongst the best in the world since quite a few years.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

It was ranked 20th in the current THES - QS World University Rankings, also as 17th in the current Global University Ranking. The University of Edinburgh is consistently ranked as the best university in Scotland and as one of the five best universities in Scotland by the THES - QS World University Rankings.The university played an important role in leading the city of Edinburgh to its reputation as a chief intellectual centre during the Age of Enlightenment. The University of Edinburgh has been promoting and setting standards in education for over 400 years.

It was granted its Royal Charter in 1582 following which:

The University was founded in the following year by the Town Council of Edinburgh, making it the first post-Reformation university in Scotland.In its early years the university was known as King James College, or the Tunis (Town's) College. After this, the University soon established itself internationally. By the 18th century the university was a leading centre of the European Enlightenment and one of the continent's principal universities.The University has a close relationship with the city in which it is based.

Furthermore, coupled with forward-looking, international perspective, the university has kept Edinburgh at the forefront of new research and teaching developments, enabling it to retain a uniquely Scottish character.The universitys academics are at the forefront of developments in the study and application of languages, biotechnology, micro-electronics,medicine,computer-based disciplines and many other subjects.Hence the achievements of the universitys past are strong building blocks for those who choose to study here.

WHAT THE UNIVERSITY OFFERS:

The University of Edinburgh offers more then 600 first degree programmers. This includes more then 300 joint degree combinations which are spread across some 100 academic disciplines. There are more then 22,000 students who study here from all over the world. The university has over 600 undergraduate degree programmers in a wide range of subject areas. There are also a wide variety of part time day and evening courses. The university also has to offer continuing professional development through short courses, evening talks, workshops, seminars etc. this is aimed at those who are working in professions, industry and commerce.
