subject: Motionless Mixers With Advance Mixing Technology [print this page]

Motionless static mixers use a series of specially engineered vanes or elements to create an intense turbulence that creates high levels of mixing in a pipe. As the name suggests, motionless static mixers usually have no moving parts. Motionless static mixers can be used for liquid / liquid mixing, and mixing gas streams. Mixers are available that are specifically designed for mixing liquid and gas or gases into liquid.

Mixers are available in virtually all pipe sizes. They range from [6 mm] to 120[3000mm] diameter.

As the name suggests, motionless static mixers are a specially made device that helps in mixing different liquids. Apart from fluids, it can also be used to mix a gas with liquid or combine two gas streams into one. If you look inside a typical mixer of this type, you shall find that it comprises of the mixer components housed in a tube-shaped or square-shaped container.

The simplicity of design, low cost, high levels of mixing and lack of maintenance or downtime make static mixers the preferred choice over mechanical mixers.

There are several other components that might be used in manufacturing these mixersthey include stainless steel, polypropylene or even Teflon (where corrosive materials are involved). As the name suggests, motionless static mixers usually have no or few moving parts.

Motinless static mixers are available in nearly all material choices. Materials include stainless steel, polypropylene, PVC, Teflon, CPVC, PVDF, and fiberglass. Mixers are available with protective coatings, including Teflon and epoxy fusion coating. These coating choices ensure that the mixers do not corrode and give many years of service.

Typical applications

Mixers can be used for liquid-liquid mixing. Two liquids of different densities and viscosity can be mixed using these mixers.

Mixers can also be used to integrate gas into a fluid. This process is usually known as contacting.

Additionally, these mixers also are used to enhance the heat transfer process. A static mixer that is added to the tubular elements in a heat exchanger will immediately improve the heat transfer by ensuring a higher delta T across the wall of the heat exchanger.

Mixers have also been used for mixing powders that have a granular consistency.

Komax offers a type of motionless static mixer that work exceptionally well with viscous materials.

Static mixers have gained acceptance and are used for a wide range of applications in the following industries:

Food & Beverage

Pulp/ Paper

Petrochemical

Water/Wastewater

Chemical Processing

Biofuels

Power Plants

Desalination

Mining

Polymer
