And that's a mind-change. We are transformed by that renewing of our mind. There's an old trick that circus trainers do with their elephants. When the elephant is young, they put a stake in the ground, a chain around its foot, and it stays there. It tries to get away but it can't get away. As that elephant gets older, they just put the stake in the ground -- no chain at all because the chain is in the elephant's mind. It tries to go away and then it thinks, "no, I can't get away from that." but thank god he breaks that sort of chain in our mind from things that don't even exist anymore. I love the words of that old hymn: he breaks the power of cancelled sin. So once we are free from a thing, the thoughts of it can linger on but jesus has come and said, "sin shall no longer have dominion over you."
