subject: How To Reduce The Stress Of Adapting To Living In Egypt [print this page]

Being a foreigner in an unfamiliar land can sometimes make you feel a bit lonely and confused, and adjusting to different customs and traditions is sometimes hard.

It is very common to feel a little bit melancholy and stressed during the first little while of living in Egypt. You might be missing your friends, unsure about what to do in your new home, and feeling a bit of place. Remember that this is completely normal and this period of adjustment happens to anyone who moves to a new place. You will soon become accustomed to your surroundings and living in Egypt will feel completely natural. Until then, here are some tips that will help you through the adaptation process of living within a different culture.

- Take the initiative to learn more about the culture, language, and history of Egypt. The more you understand about the culture, the more interesting it will be to you and doing your research will help you understand why things are the way they are.

- Do not let your work take over your life. Actively strive to make social connections and have some fun while living in Egypt.

- Do not be shy! You might be tempted to stay inside your house and talk on the phone to your friends back home, but this is not the way to make new friends. Join a group, take a class, and become involved in the community and you will meet many interesting people who will make living in Egypt much more fun.

- Of course there will be things about Egyptian culture that you do not particularly like, but try not to focus on these aspects and complain about them. Instead, identify all of the things that you enjoy about your new home and focus on those aspects instead.

- Remember to take care of yourself. Getting lots of rest, eating well, and taking time out to relax will do wonders for reducing your stress.

- Start learning a little bit of the language. It will help you understand the world around you and communicate with locals better.

- If you have moved to Egypt with your partner or your family, remember to still spend lots of time together and continue to nurture your relationship. Having someone with you to experience living in Egypt will provide you with the support that you need, so keep these bonds strong.

- Do not be afraid to try something new, whether it is Egyptian food that you have never tasted or a new hobby that your friends invite you to partake in. Being adventurous will expose you to lots of novel experiences which will make living in Egypt a constant adventure!

Living in Egypt can be a huge adjustment, but once you get used to the culture of this fascinating country you will feel right at home!
