subject: Learning To Fly - Loving What You Do [print this page] What do you love doing? What excites you? What gets you up early in the morning and keeps you up late at night?
I remember the day I got hooked. I have a few friends that are professional speakers. One friend in particular is not only a great speaker, but a pilot with his own airplane. He was flying to Denver a few years ago and asked me if I wanted to come along and be his co-pilot. I was free that weekend so I immediately jumped at the opportunity.
I met him at Scottsdale airport where he was getting the plane ready. I was a little nervous, but it was more excitement than anything. As the plane slowly lifted off the ground, we climbed over Scottsdale on our way to Denver; the view took my breath away. It was so much different than being on a commercial flight. I could see things so much easier. The sense of complete freedom overtook me. I felt like a kid experiencing Christmas for the first time. That flight gave me a taste of what absolute freedom meant to me. It inspired me in a way that nothing else has.
A couple of months passed, and it was that time between Christmas and New Years when you find yourself in limbo. As I was creating my Be-Do-Have list, one of the first things that I wrote down was...
To become a private pilot and earn my pilots license
I had lots of goals, but that one kept coming up. I thought about it non- stop. I knew the first step towards achieving anything was to take some kind of action right away. I immediately emailed and called my good friend who was a pilot and worked for Cessna. He asked if I would like to do my discovery flight with him. The discovery flight is a students first flight. I was actually able to be on the controls, fly the airplane and be in control while the instructor guided me through the process. If I was hooked before, I became obsessed after that flight! From there, I reached out to a local flight school, enrolled in the program, bought my books and training materials and got started. About a year after starting lessons, I earned my pilots license. It was one of the best accomplishments of my life.
It took a lot of lessons, reading, studying and flying with my instructor before I was ready for my first solo flight. I EARNED the opportunity to fly solo.
