subject: Career As A Hair Stylist [print this page]

Hair is an integral part of your look and the style of your hair reflects your personality. Short, cropped, long, colored, layered and so forth your hair says something about you as a person! That said, many of us dont know what to do with our hair or what will look good on us. So, when we go to a salon or a hair dresser, we typically just go with a magazine picture in mind. This is where a hair stylist can make a huge difference.. While cutting and styling your hair is officially their job, giving the client suggestions of different haircuts and styles is an important part of a hair stylists job description!

The duties and responsibilities of a hair stylist are:

Grooming of hair

Cutting hair according to client desires

Shampooing of hair

Coloring in some cases

Cut, shape, comb or perms

Making recommendations and suggestions for different styles

Depending on the location and type of salon, shampooing of hair before the cut is typically performed by a stylist. As a hair stylist, it is essential to gauge the quality of hair of the client, know their expectations, lifestyle and so forth. A hair stylist needs to tell the client how he/she will look after the cut, what the style involves and maintenance needed. There needs to be a healthy dialogue and conversation between the stylist and the client because hair reflects your personality. If the client is not satisfied, the stylist will likely lose a customer.

Hair stylists therefore need to be good communicators and good listeners. A stylist needs to keep updating his or her skill level. You cannot stagnate in the field of beauty and fashion. A stylist needs to know all of the latest fashions, which hair styles are hot, and above all, how to execute the perfect hair cut!

Depending on your city and location you can work at a salon or spa or even be associated with the film industry. Salaries in an upscale salon can be very good. But the job is demanding both physically and mentally. As a stylist, you have to be on your feet continuously and in most cases a lot of your pay is based on commissions and tips.

If you are a creative person with a passion for style, beauty and hair, then a career as a hair stylist could be the perfect job for you.
