subject: How To Choose A Roofing Contractor [print this page]

Atlanta roofer Superior Roofing recommends caution when investing in your home-for roof repair or any other contracting need.

"Make sure to check with your insurance company to see if they have experience with the company," said Ron Herring, Superior Roofing owner. "They won't usually recommend a specific roofer to repair or replace your roof, but they will tell you if they have had experience with them."

Here are some other tips for selecting a roofing contractor:

1) Check the company's business license.

2) Check the company's insurance.

3) Call at least three references.

4) Ask to see examples of their work.

5) Find out how long they've been doing business under their current name. Some unscrupulous companies will change names to avoid paying out on warranties.

6) Get three bids.

7) Never make the decision to buy in front of salespeople. Tell them you need to think about it, and see how they react. If they then offer discounts of more than 15%, it's a sign the original quote was falsely high. If they are high-pressure, ask yourself why they need the business so badly.

The above vetting process will help protect you against shoddy workmanship... or worse.

In September, Joyce Skipwith, a Gwinnett County resident, was left without a roof or her money when an unscrupulous roofer left town suddenly. Over a year ago, the ersatz roofer knocked on Ms. Skipwith's door and told her that her roof was worn out. That may have been the only truthful thing he ever said. Next, he helped the homeowner apply for an insurance payout to cover the cost of a new roof and then left town with the money. But he didn't do the work.

After seeing a news story on television, Atlanta-based Superior Roofing offered to replace the woman's worn out roof free of charge. Superior Roofing's owners just felt it was the right thing to do.

"There are many good roofing contractors in Atlanta and it's a shame that this nice lady had such a bad experience. It gives all of us a black eye," said Ron Herring. "We couldn't sit idly by while she suffered like this."
