subject: The Joy And Pain Of Moving [print this page]

No one wants to pack up and move from one residence to another. We know moving is literally a pain the umpteenth time we squat to pack another large carton with part of our worldly belongings. We don't realize how much junk we have accumulated until we start filling boxes with the stuff. We probably don't know where half of it came from and why we bought it in the first place as we sort it all out.

The longer you live in a place the more stuff you accumulate. Five years in a residence gives you a ton of junk. We tend to cram things into drawers and closets just to get it out of the way. We swear we will come back and go through it later to dispense with it, but that never happens.

Maybe your family has grown, or maybe your dream house is finally on the market. Whatever the reason for uprooting you ilk, house hunting can be really fun. That's right, F-U-N. You get to look at so many different houses, searching for the best fit for your family. It can be stressful, but look at house hunting more as a shopping trip than a business decision and it'll go a little smoother.

There is a lot of work that has to be done though before we can just start moving our stuff in. Almost all houses need a fresh coat of paint on the walls and the carpets usually need to be cleaned. And most of the time it needs a quick cleaning. No one wants to live in someone else's dirt and grime. Sometimes a little remodeling is in order before moving in. Who couldn't use some new cabinets and countertops?

Readying the new abode for moving in is always fun. It brings out the interior decorator in us. We get to pick paint colors and decide on improvements to make. What is not fun is packing up our stuff in the old house and unpacking our stuff in the new. Cleaning out all the drawers and closets is abominable. Cleaning out the garage is even worse.

The garage generally looks like a typhoon hit it, or it resembles a landfill with mismatched miscellaneous garbage. Everything from tools to old boots, spare parts of something or other long gone, and a bike without wheels can be found in most people's garages. There are cartons lining the walls and tucked into every possible space containing who knows what and they haven't been opened since you moved in. Moving is no picnic, cleaning the garage is even worse than that.

Once the garage is spic and span though and all the packing and cleaning the house is done, the rewards are immense. You are finally in your new home with your new decor and the paint colors you chose are fabulous. You feel like you have really accomplished something. Everything is as you envisioned it would be. What's even more satisfying is the knowledge that you won't have to move again for many, many years.
