subject: Dark Fiber Service And Dark Fiber Networks [print this page]

Dark Fiber refers to the communications system which utilizes optical fibers. The word was first coined to identify the capacity to network of a telecommunications infrastructure system. At the present, the system also describes the rental of fiber optic connections from an internet service provider.

Since the invention of this Dark Fiber technology, many of the large industries are quite hesitant to avail of this kind of internet communications service because they think that this technology is pricey. Little do they know, this offers a lot of advantage aside from the reasonable price? Ample knowledge is needed before enrolling in this kind of innovative gadget so that a business establishment will know the factors involved which makes any business prosper and gain more profits.

A milestone of a development happened in the year 1997. Huge digging projects took place in the seas of Tokyo, Japan and the city of London, England. The remaining unused Dark Fiber bundles were then stored and used in the succeeding future. The digging operations then were met with a disgruntled public because of the surmounting obstructions and inconvenience.

Many of the metro cities and big deal businesses ceased the opportunity to dig and connect the Dark Fiber cables so that they will cut the time needed to spend on future digging projects. In the previous years, only the telecommunications industries had the chance to use these Dark Fiber networks. They also monopolized the rental of unused lines to commercial industries.

Nowadays, the huge corporations and other business establishments are not only renting the unused lines but they are also in the process of formulating their own Dark Fiber networks. This method not only improved the companies but it also up the level of their bandwidth. The companies have transformed into a self-reliant, profit generating industries.

The very reason why most of the companies do this kind of strategy is because of the price of the Dark Fiber. But, right now the price had gone down remarkably because of tons of unused optical fibers. This has made it possible for a lot of companies to avail of the service. Another reason why it became cheaper was because medium-sized industries are now taking advantage of this service and are able to give a much lowered rate to install the systems.

Another advantage of this service is that unlike copper fibers which easily leaks out, the technology is tapping resistant, and has less tendency to have jamming and frequency problems. Once the fiber optical network line is jacketed and then coated, the pulsing light is totally encased inside the cable- making it impossible to tap.

Many computer systems are reaping the benefits of the Dark Fiber service. Industries are now starting to notice the benefits of fiber optics as safer and flexible option to copper wiring. Apart from the smaller advantages of this technological breakthrough which provides longer bandwidth, interference and trapping and jamming resistance; the Dark Fiber is buried underneath the ocean floor which makes it virtually impossible for any terrorist to destroy it. To be able to cut the wires, one huge equipment needs to be used.
