subject: Fosamax And Some Considerations [print this page]

Researchers say that people suffering from osteoporosis have high risks of experiencing bone fractures. The bone becomes weaker with the known conditions involve in osteoporosis. The medication often recommended for these people is in the form of a biphosphonate drug. The drug called Fosamax is one of the best examples. Right now, the drug has become very popular as evident by the increasing number of people filing complaints as issues with the drug surfaced. But if we are to traced its history, it wasnt really that famous. In fact, a Fosamax demand was just created by Merck.

Biphosphonates are the commonly used drug in treating high risk osteoporosis, which works as an antiresorptive or bone anabolic agents. Osteoporosis patients who were taking the drug for its initial time of four years reported good feedback about the drugs effective fracture preventive function. The biphosphonate drug, Fosamax, was reported to cause harmful complications such as atypical, low-impact femur fractures allegedly experienced by patients using the drug for a long duration of more than four years.

Studies were conducted to prove or disprove the allegations put forth by alleged Fosamax victims. An influential study entitled Bisphosphonate Use and Atypical Fractures of the Femoral Shaft was published in the May issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Those side effects were meant to be highlighted. As some of them were convinced of the drugs harmful complications, the study jolted many doctors. But other medical practitioners believe that the benefits rendered by the drug is valuable than its adverse effects. Head research of this controversial study, Dr. Per Aspenberg said, These population-based nationwide analysis may be reassuring for patients who receive bisphosphonates. Although there was a high prevalence of current bisphosphonate use among patients with atypical fractures, the absolute risk was small.

Right now, the number of people filing for a Fosamax lawsuit is on a constant increase. The experience of atypical and low-impact femur fracture is seen on many people. The trends suggest that these people are not going to decrease their number soon.
