subject: Organize Your Area [print this page]

Sometimes there are simple things that you can do to become better and more efficient. These steps work great at work or in the home, the trick being consistency. Without consistency, all the work you do will be a waste of time. But like anything else, from gardening and exercise, if you are consistent, you will end up with a much better product than if you aren't.

But being consistent in anything is easier said than done. It takes work, determination and many times a team effort to get this type of thing done. You need everybody, whether it is the family or your coworkers working towards the same goals. If you can't get everybody on the same page and everybody buying into the concept of being consistent in what they are doing, then you will end up wasting everybody's time.

And the next time you try something, try to change something, you will hear grumblings and negative feeling towards it because they will remember that last time nobody was consistent in the effort and it failed. Like a yo-yo diet every January, changing things and trying to do them differently will only fail and get on every person nerves if there is not a good game plan in place. It needs to be well thought out, well organized and clearly explained from the beginning so that everybody knows what they are expected to do.

One thing that is easy to be consistent with and should be an easy first step for anybody is organization. Organizing their work area should be a priority for everyone, every day. There should never be an excuse that is acceptable of why an area cannot be well organized. Sure, everybody is busy, but everybody can make time to put away their tools, to file their papers, to clean their work space. If you cannot find the time to do that, then how do you have enough time to dig through all of the garbage when you should be doing some actual work?

It doesn't make any sense when you think about it, and because there is no real justification for it, messiness and disorganized work areas should not be tolerated. In addition to making the work harder than it should be and take longer than it should, it can also be a safety hazard. It is easy to get hurt because there is a mess and it is difficult to justify that sort of accident as unavoidable.
