subject: Vertical Blinds - The Perfect Fit For Any Holiday Home [print this page]

Oftentimes, the holiday home will be situated in a location that has a nice view, be it on the beach or on a mountaintop. There is no better way to retain the beauty of the view, allow the sun in and maintain privacy, than with vertical blinds. These blinds give owners greater control of the light that floods into a room, which can be quite practical, in terms of saving energy. This is especially true if the blinds are covering a large window.

Verticals allow holiday homeowners to experience less time cleaning and more time enjoying their holiday. Because of the vertical structure of these blinds, they are far less apt than horizontal blinds to become dusty. They offer far more placement versatility than traditional horizontal blinds as well.

During cold winters, vertical blinds can help insulate a ski cabin or other cold weather holiday home. During hot summers, they can help insulate a room to save money on air conditioning costs. They also help protect rugs and furniture from the direct rays of the sun, which can cause fading.

So often, the holiday home will have a more casual atmosphere than one's fulltime home. Vertical blinds in the holiday home can set the tone of the room and add a nice decorating touch without being too formal or fussy. The clean lines go well in virtually any dcor, and since they can be purchased in a wide variety of colours, these blinds can help carry a colour theme throughout a room. For example, one might select pillows for one's sofa that match, or in some way compliment, the blinds.

It is recommended that one chooses blinds that are constructed from wood or aluminium as these are sturdier than ones that have been constructed of PVC plastics. The latter choice also has environmental issues to consider, and can discolour or become brittle and fragile over time. Another choice is blinds made of various woven fabrics. However, these fabrics normally cover thin, wooden blind slats. The fabric blinds can be a little more expensive. However, the decorating options and possibilities are endless. There is a less expensive variety of fabric blinds that are made from stitch-bonded fabrics. These are of lesser quality than the actual woven fabric varieties.

Though these types of blinds have been around since the 1970's, many changes have occurred over the years to help keep them current with today's home dcor fashions. One company issues blinds that are vertical S-shapes. This compensates for what some consider as a problem "dressing them up." While it is true that the simplicity of these blinds does blend in with most holiday home dcor options, some people simply prefer a dressier blind. The S-shaped blinds are a solution to this problem, as are creative selections in decorative valances or cornices. The verticals can also be dressed up a bit by adding panel drapes on the sides. These can be changed out with different colours and patterns to alter the room's appearance or ambience.
