subject: 6 Great Tips For Lawn Maintenance [print this page]

However well you may know about a subject or activity, things become better when you get some useful tips from experts and other experienced people on that subject. Lawn maintenance is one activity that many people are now becoming very passionate about. They would like to absorb all the knowledge and tips they can get so that they do the right things and take good care of their lawns.

This interest in doing their own lawn maintenance stems from the fact that those having the privilege of a good lawn in front of their house, do not want to outsource maintenance. They do not mind spending time and effort provided they can be aided by constructive and correct tips. One of the main reasons for people wanting to outsource lawn maintenance has been the lack of timely advice and the apprehension that they may not be following recommended practices.

A job well begun is half done. When it comes to lawn maintenance, the beginning is very crucial. Many people make the mistake of not getting rid of accumulated debris prior to planting seeds and taking further steps towards creating a lawn. They feel that it is just a matter of sprinkling some seeds and you will have grass growing quickly on any surface.

Follow the steps as mentioned below:

a) Make sure all debris is removed and the soil prepared to accept the new challenge. You can make use of a tiller. It will help you unearth big stones and other stuff that lies buried in the soil. A uniform area without bumps makes for a better foundation and you can now start with planting the seeds as well as spraying the right fertilisers.

b) Go for fertilisers with more phosphate content as the soil needs this at the beginning. The seeds can be spread using the broadcast spreader. Protect the area with hay and use water to soak. Water it daily to allow seed germination.

c) After tilling, it is time to spread the fertiliser. For new lawns, 6-12-12 or 6-24-24 is recommended. Those have more phosphate than maintenance fertilisers. Once you fertilise, it is time to spread the seeds. A broadcast spreader can be used for fertilising, seeding and for lawn care in the future.

d) Once you see grass growing, you need to thicken it at the beginning itself and that means buying an aerator. This machine keeps thatches from forming and does not allow any fungi to develop. Doing this in the initial stages itself is important. Many people do not make this investment and end up with lawns infested with fungi and thatches that they find hard to remove later.

e) Aeration is followed by more sprinkling of seeds and dragging the area using a board that is attached to the mower. Any plugs in the soil are removed and the seeds get embedded deep into the soil.

f) An In-ground irrigation system is the best way to water the lawn as it prevents excess watering, wastage and the sod is protected as well.
