subject: Re-using Rainwater Is Proven To Be Just As Safe As Using Mains Water [print this page]

If you're considering investing in a rainwater harvesting system from SCP Environmental Ltd, then one question you're bound to have is whether rainwater is any different than getting it from the mains supply. Two things come to mind, is it safe, and is it better?

As far as safety goes, you need not be concerned about recycled rainwater. Reusing rainwater for residential use is just as safe as any other source of water. As it happens, you'll probably find out that recycled rainwater is better for washing clothes than mains water that has been extensively treated with chemicals.

Natural rainwater is clean and fresh, and the only precautions you need to take are regarding the method of capture. By using underground storage tanks, your water supply is not open to the elements, so it's impossible for contaminants to "fall into" your water storage tank. However, care must be taken to stop leaves and other debris from being washed into the tank with rainwater. Filters can prevent most of this, and as long as regular maintenance is carried out every few months to check water quality, then there really is no problem with re-using rainwater.

In fact, the only main issue with rainwater harvesting is stopping insects from getting into the water supply, but even this can be effectively eradicated by using gutter mesh to stop gutters from becoming clogged (which is a favourite breeding ground for insects), and by fitting downpipes with filters to separate leaves and debris, and thus ensure the proper flow of water. As long as water flows easily into your water storage tank, then insects cannot settle and start breeding.

As far as quality is concerned, you will find that although you cannot drink the water you have gained from rain harvesting, it will be a lot better for washing clothes and floors or windows in the home. Rainwater leaves very little residue when it dries, unlike hard mains water that can leave deposits or "scum" behind, especially in hard water areas. Imagine what these deposits in the water can do to clothes or even the bodywork of your car over a long period of time. Rainwater is generally softer and kinder.

You can also add a disinfectant to your rainwater supply if you really want to, to give you peace of mind, but in most cases this is unnecessary, as recycled rainwater on its own stays clean for a long time.
