subject: Clothes Pegs Are Not For Clothes Only [print this page]

Clothes peg, also known as clothes pin is a pin or prong that is fixed on clothes for drying. In general, they are used as a gripping material. Clothes peg varies in designs and can be made up of different materials. Clothes peg works by the use of a lever, when the prongs are pinched at the top; the prongs open and close when released.

The older version of clothes peg is one-piece and has no springs. The conventional ones are those made up of plastics or wood that interlocks with a wedged spring. The design was pioneered by David Smith of Springfield, Vermont in 1850s. A benefit of plastic pegs is that they do not stain clothes when wet; the downside is, they are easily broken. On the other hand, those which are made up of wood are more durable, but leave dark marks on clothes when being rained or wetted. Be careful on the springs of clothes peg as they may also stain through rust. Wooden clothes pegs made in UK are made from willow.
