subject: Where Has The Summer Gone? [print this page] Now that the winter is well and truly here you may feel the need to sort a few things out around your house and garden. My article is here to remind you of those things which you may wish to consider checking or doing before the main coldness gets here. Don't forget that if you live in a village or small community it's always worth doing things together and helping each other out. Helping the elderly or the less fortunate is nice and helping others will hopefully mean that if you're ever stuck you'll have help in return. I hope you find this article informative and useful.
Firstly don't forget that you'll need to order logs in if you have a fire. You can also purchase coal which may be good as it can really promote heat but don't forget this is an extra expense. Along with this you may wish to order in kindling separately. Don't forget that if you do not wish to purchase kindling you can make your own by chopping your normal wood into small pieces. It's also worth keeping newspaper and paper handy so that you can start a fire. If you have all this ready at the start of the winter you'll be able to light a fire anytime you get cold. Along with storing it outside I would purchase boxes and keep logs, kindling and paper near your fire indoors so that you don't have to navigate outside in the cold and rain to get to your storage of logs. When this is empty fill it up in the daylight so it's there for you in the winter.
It's also worth checking whether you need septic tank emptying. If you leave septic tank emptying until when you need it desperately it's sods law it will be when the snow has arrived and the waste tank emptying company cannot get their lorries down the road. Without waste tank emptying you cannot use the toilet or showers and you could be stuck in the snow and ice without these for quite some time. Be prepared and if it looks not far off full but the weather is OK get it emptied before it's too late.
