subject: Tips That Can Help You In Fixing Garage Doors [print this page]

A garage door has two main parts, one is the opener, and another is the door itself. Damages may occur in any of these parts. Repairing guidelines for both of the parts are described here. To do these repairing tasks you will need some tools, such as hammer, screwdriver, pliers etc.

Overhead garage doors are operated on spring tension. Some doors swing up as one piece, some rollup in sections. There are metal tracks on the walls; heavy springs provide necessary power to move the door. In many cases, repairing tasks are fairly simple; following tips can help you to repair your garage door.

If the door does not work, then you should check the mounting brackets and metal tracks. Check the bolts and screws, if they are loose tighten them properly. Find out whether there is any crimp, flat spot, or dent; if there is any, use a hammer or a rubber mallet and a piece of scrap wood to pound the dent out. Now you should check that the tracks are properly aligned. You can use a level for this task. Usually there will be two tracks; both the tracks should be at same height. If they are not in proper position, then loosen the screws and set them in position. Recheck them with a level.

Hardened grease and dirt may create problems in opening the door. Use concentrated cleaner to clean the tracks and rollers. All the hardware should be checked and tightened. Springs are mounted on plates, check these plates and tightened them if necessary. There are hinges in the rollup doors, damaged hinges should be replaced. Damaged hinges often create sagging. In such cases, servicing is necessary. Enlarged screw hole is a reason for loosed screw. Remove the screw and use longer size screw in those holes. You can also use wood filler to fill the holes. However, it is better to remove the hinge from the cracks and set onto the solid wood.

While working with the springs you should be cautious enough as the spring may hurt you. Some roll doors use only one spring, risk is higher here. You should call a professional for such tasks. These tips are helpful for simple repairing tasks. If the door is automatic and operated by electricity, then you will have to check the motor and electrical part also.
