subject: What You Should Consider While Choosing An Mtb Helmet [print this page]

Mountain biking is one of the sports that doesnt always require efforts of a complete team for great performance. However, in order to have the optimum performance in this sport, you need a careful consideration of few factors. These factors are safety, strength, quick decision making and of course, an increased adrenaline level!

Among all these qualities, safety is something that cannot be overlooked at any time during the sport. This is because an injury doesnt wait for the right time and can occur when youre not as careful as your should be. This is where the need for proper protection gear becomes prominent.

Since your head is one of the most sensitive organs prone to the most severe injuries, its always important to wear a good MTB helmet. An MTB helmet not only protects your head from several injuries, but also does it keep you cool and lets you focus on your performance rather than safety. However, selection of a good helmet for mountain biking can be relatively tricky. This is why this article discusses few points you should consider while choosing your MTB helmet:

Type of helmet

Helmets for mountain biking are available in three main categories, Cross-country helmets, Skate style helmets, and Full Face helmets. Each of the types of helmet serve a different purpose and is suited for different styles of mountain biking. For instance, a full face MTB helmet is suitable for those who enjoy aggressive, high-speed and risky kind of mountain biking. On the other hand, the cross-country MBT helmets are light-weight, fully ventilated, and comfortable helmets that provide an adequate level of protection for normal cross-country mountain biking.

Certification and Compliances

The helmet you choose for bike riding must meet the quality standards and certifications before you buy it. The most commonly complied standard for biking is the CPSC bike helmet certification which is followed by almost all good helmets for mountain biking. However, some full-face helmets also comply with some additional safety standards and certifications as they are suited for the higher-risk activities as well.

Size and weight

Size of a helmet is an important consideration. The helmet should not be too big for your head since it may keep grabbing your attention intermittently and might not even help at the time of an accident. At the same time, it shouldnt be too tight either because they will increase the blood pressure and increase the pressure on your head causing a great discomfort.

Weight of the helmet should also be easily bearable on your head. A heavy helmet can cause a great discomfort. On the other hand, an unusually lightweight helmet might not have sufficient strength to absorb impacts and may not be sufficiently protective.
