subject: How Does One Find The Many Wind Tax Credits? [print this page]

Wind tax credits have been a real shot in the arm for wind turbine businesses selling these devices to homeowners. With rising energy costs across the board, it is no wonder that people have been aggressively taking the government up on the offer.

The federal government is now offering a 30% tax credit for installing wind energy at your home. What that means is you take 30% of the purchase and installation costs, (your total installed cost of the unit), and that will be your "credit". Of course, you will have to have someone other than you certify that the windmill is actually in place.

Here are the other forms of rebates and credits that you may be able to get also, depending on where you live:

* State and city credits that follow the federal government's credit. Many states offer credits and also cities within those states sometimes offer credits. They obviously do this in an attempt to help boost the probability that you will actually buy and install a wind turbine. These are usually available in states with a lot of wind that have aggressive goals for installing a certain amount of capacity within a short period of time, like California, for example has large wind tax credits available.

* Utility rebates - utility companies also will offer rebates on equipment that you buy. The reason for that is they have been charged by local public service commissions to reduce the amount of energy they produce from fossil fuels. In other words, they have been told - don't build any more coal plants. To achieve that goal, they've got to incentivize you to install renewable energy devices. That way, you'll need to buy as much energy from them and they won't need to build new power plants.

* Manufacturers' rebates - oftentimes, manufacturers will also give you an incentive to buy their product instead of their competitors' products. In highly competitive markets, like in states where wind is a big factor, the competition can be very intense. Especially when there are large rebates and credits available from state and local governments for wind energy.

In conclusion, if you go through a dealer they will have all the wind tax credits and rebates nailed down and may even file many of them for you. But, if you are building the wind device on your own you will have to do some searching to make sure you pick up all of these incentives that are available to you.
