Eczema is type of Dermatitis, or inflammation of the skin. "eczema" is a term that can include various persistent skin complaints, such as dry skin and recurring skin rashes.The symptomsof Eczema can include one or more of the following -

Allergic, caused by a delayed reaction to an allergen such as poison ivy or nickel

Irritant, caused by a reaction to certain detergents.

Xerotic Eczema - Sometimes called Winter Itch, a dry skin complaint that becomes so serious it turns into Eczema. it gets worse during dry winter weather. The elderly are particularly susceptible to this problem.

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis ( called "cradle cap" on newly born infants)

A form of Eczema very closely related to dandruff., recognized by dry or greasy peeling of the scalp, eyebrows, face and sometimes the trunk.
