subject: The NHSC Scholarship – A general Overview [print this page]

This scholarship is responsible for educating people in the medical, dental as well as in the mental health spheres of health care.

According to the NHSC ever since its inception in the year 1972 over 30,000 clinicians have reportedly made their presence in service in the Corps. They have been primarily responsible for improving the health and thereby lives of those who live in the rural as well as urban areas of the county. These were basically places that were far or had no immediate access to proper health services that fell into this category.

NHSC clinicians help people live a better life; apart from the basic health care service these clinicians have also joined the HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration). They are support wings to already established health centers that help in making sure that there is adequate primary as well as preventive medical care for every person who needs their services. This is regardless if patients have the money to pay for their medical treatment or no. The corps recognized that there were around 40% of people who lived life without any health care insurance. This in other terms meant that they had no money to pay for their illness whenever they conducted any illness.

The NHSC is recognized as a program that is competitive by helping support MD's or DO's with clinical physicians, midwifes who are certified, nurse practitioners for family, dentists, assistants to physicians, dental hygienist and clinicians for a few other spheres of medical health care. The scholarship program has a unique way of helping students who do not have the ability to pay for courses that are generally highly priced. These scholarship programs are devised in such a way where the student can repay his/her education loan by working 2 years for a community based site. These sites are areas that the HPSA recognizes as needy areas for health care services.
