subject: Why Do We Need To Learn English [print this page]

Many years ago the world was a place where communication with others was very limited. After the invention of the telephone we started to talk to each other more. We no longer had to write letters or go down the road to speak to someone. After the arrival of television, radio and the internet with services such as web pages, chat, and voip communication exploded. When something happens today we know about it on the other side of the world within a few minutes.

So it was no surprise that businesses around the world quickly decided to take advantage of this almost seamless communication. What were once businesses which only dealt with other businesses in their own regions and countries quickly became businesses in the global market. But for these businesses realized to compete in the global market they had to communicate with these other countries and a universal language had to be chosen. The language that was chosen was English.

But why is English the universal language? During the past century the United States led the world economy and the dollar was strong. Many businesses in other countries knew this and dealt with other businesses in The US. As many companies in the US realized that labor was much less expensive in some foreign countries they moved their labor operations to those countries. For these other companies to communicate with their new customers they had to learn English.

Again, why do we need to learn English?

Now people know that if they cant speak English they simply can not get a job at one of these companies. The people who have worked at these companies for years also realize that if they dont learn English that they may be replaced by someone who can? Simply put, if you want to make the sale you have to speak with your customer.

However there is good news. When you leave work, away from the hustle and bustle of the business world, you can still go home and relax with your family and forget about English for a short time.
