subject: Free Dna Kits, And What They Contain [print this page]

DNA testing is the most commonly used method for determining biological relationships such as paternity. These tests are carried out on biological samples taken from the subjects being tested, and some means has to be provided to collect the samples from those that place the order. Although blood was at one time the most common source of DNA for this purpose, advances in testing techniques have enabled simpler samples to be used and collected by the subject using test kits provided by the testing laboratory.

Although the details of their contents will vary, each company will generally include an instruction sheet, some oral swabs to collect samples from the mouth, containers into which to place the swabs with their samples and documentation for the client's personal details. There might also be labels and other information relating to the company and the test, and any safeguards to take when returning the samples to the laboratory should be detailed.

Some clients prefer to remain anonymous, at least from the prying eyes of their neighbors, and if you prefer the testing to be carried out that way, you should inform the company with which you placed the order. They will then send you the test kit under a plain wrapper, completely unmarked. Most labs will be able to do this without a problem, but you will have to request it because otherwise their envelopes could well be marked with the purpose of the kit. You might even be having this test carried out without your partner's knowledge.

The instructions that come with these free DNA kits should be clear and precise, and show you exactly how to take the sample and how to avoid contamination. Clear photographs or diagrams are useful, and a video of the sample being taken would be even better. It is not a difficult thing to do, but some people will be nervous and want to make sure that nothing goes wrong. It is, after, a very important issue to them as it is to you.
