subject: New Year, New Room, New You [print this page]

The Christian New Year may be January 1, but September always feels like a new beginning. Perhaps it's our school days that have engrained the feeling of new beginnings into our minds, perhaps it's the end of summer and the smell of autumn, sharpened pencils and lunch boxes. Whatever it is, it inspires ideas of change. There are many things that we can do celebrate this new beginning. We could:

1. Sign up for a class:

A lot of evening courses start in September. Signing up for something you've always been interested to learn will not only be educational but fun too and a great way to meet new people. It's always a good idea to shake up your schedule a bit, new routines tend to inspire new ideas.

2. Feng Shui your room:

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese system of aesthetics believed to use the laws of both Heaven and Earth to help one improve life by receiving positive energy force. It's difficult to say whether it works, but it's worth a shot. Not only might you be on the receiving end of good omens but moving your room around tends to inspire a thorough clean-up. Give your year a fresh start by getting rid of the things you don't need.

3. Revamp your closet:

New year, new season equals new look, which means a new closet. This might ring cash register bells in your ear and that might not be the most comforting noise at the time. If that's the case, then instead go through your closet, pull out the things you want to get rid of, amend those that could use some alterations and organise those pieces that you love. There's no reason why you can't make new outfits and create new looks out of old clothes.

4. Start a new regime:

People have a tendency to build their new year's resolutions around physical fitness. While you might not be interested in losing weight or building more muscle, it's always a good objective to get healthy. Jumpstart your year with a cleanse or new workout routine. If you don't have a gym maybe join one. If you're sick of the Stairmaster then sign up for some yoga classes. Clear the junk out of your fridge and replace it with some healthy fruits and vegetables. Your mind and body will thank you for it I promise.

What will you do to get ready for the new year?
