subject: How To Dress Hip-hop [print this page]

Hip-hop has a whole new world of fashion for hip people to hop onto. Whether youre east-side, west-side, a DJ, an MC, a wannabe gangster or just an admirer, hip-hop is an easy fashion to get into and certainly doesnt have a short-term shelf-life, unlike most other fashions. Here how to get started:

Top half

Baggy is the way forward with hip-hop. Baggy sports shirts are best, but basketball is the sport of choice for hip-hop enthusiasts. If you can find a baggy basketball shirt in a bold colour, such as red, blue, green or white, then youre doing hip-hop right. If sport isnt exactly your thing, then a shirt sporting the face and name of your favourite rapper is probably your best bet. 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Eminem are all good choices. The die-hard hip-hop fanatics might even want to pay homage to the martyr of hip-hip himself though: the legendary Tupac. Whatever it is you choose, go baggy. Hell, even if its a baggy cashmere sweater it will look good, you know what Im saying?

Bottom half

Jeans. Wear jeans. Baggy ones, of course. The lower the crotch sits, the better. Hell, its even better if the crotch is only sitting inches from the floor so that youre practically dragging it behind you. Make sure you display those briefs, also. Even better, wear some briefs with a nice label around the waist, like Calvin Klein or something.

Head

You dont always need to wear any headgear to be hip-hop, but the backwards baseball cap is so iconic that it would be almost foolish not to wear it. Though actually, these days hip-hop fans tend to favour the forward-facing baseball cap style, especially the dome-shaped style with the flat peak. The label of choice should be New York, as its just so iconic. If baseball caps arent your thing, then maybe it would be best to stick with a simple scarf.

Shoes

Basketball shoes, you know what Im saying?

But its not all that important, really. Anyone can consider themselves hip-hop; you can wear anything you like and still be a fan. Raincoats are hip-hop. Cashmere knitwear is hip-hop. Tweed jackets though, are not hip-hop.
