subject: Get Ready For Hostess Duty This Holiday Season! [print this page]

It's October, which means that the season for holiday parties is upon us! If you're on hostess duty this year, you might already be wondering about the best ways to prepare with the least amount of stress possible. Fortunately, I'm an old hat at this, so I have collected a few tips to help you make this holiday season the best yet, at least as far as party-throwing and cleanup are concerned.

If it stresses you too much to scramble to clean the house, then consider renting or reserving an outside venue. Many apartment or condominium complexes have clubhouses that you can use for your festivities with a small deposit, as long as you reserve it as far in advance as possible. Check with someone in your HOA or an office manager to find out if the date and time you want is still available.

If you have a little more money to spend, then you could investigate more upscale options, like renting a hotel ballroom. Sometimes doing this can eliminate most of the factors that make party planning a potential nightmare. Catering and cleaning are frequently provided with the total cost, but make sure you find out exactly what you're getting.

Before making any type of commitment, you'll usually receive some paperwork that explains both your obligations and your privileges. An outside venue may not be a viable option for you, but never fear! First off, if you are using your home, then only clean what you have to clean. For example, if you have multiple bathrooms, then directing all guests to use the one directly off the dining hall means you spend less time scrubbing and perfecting every little corner of all three bathrooms.

You may even want to hang a little sign to guide guests if your home ends up being a little crowded. Enlisting the help of professional carpet cleaning is vital, but whether it's before or after the fete is up to you. I advise you to wait until after the fact, as spills and stains are obviously going to be more prevalent once everyone has finished eating and drinking. Upholstery cleaning, however, may be beneficial before, particularly if you have pets.

I know that before my big Thanksgiving bash, I will be having both the couch and the loveseat cleaned thoroughly, especially since some of my family members are allergic to my cats' dander.

Ultimately, the best tip I can give you is to do whatever you are able beforehand and then relax and enjoy the party once it commences. Your friends and family members won't reject you if there's an extra dust bunny under the dining table--I promise!
