subject: The Miss Universes Of Venezuela [print this page]

The Miss Universe is the annual international beauty contest presented by the Miss Universe Organization. Founded in 1952 by the Pacific Mills Clothing Company, the contest has been continually running every year.

The most number of winners of this beauty contest has been Venezuela. The following have been the winners of the world's most prestigious beauty contest from Venezuela:

Maritza Sayalero. She is the first Miss Venezuela to win the Miss Universe title in 1979. After her reign, she chose to remain low-key by marrying Mexican tennis player Raul Ramirez. She has since lived in Mexico since 1981.

Irene Lailin Saez Conde. She won the title in 1981 who then parlayed her success in the contest into a political career. After her modeling career post Miss Universe reign, she became the mayor of Chacao, which is a municipality of Caracas. She then became governor of the state of Nueva Esparta and ran for the highest political office in Venezuela.

Barbara Palacios Teyde. After her win in 1986, she has worked in television in both Latin America and the United States. She ventured into advertising and marketing and founded the Barbara Palacios Corporation. Her company specializes in women's products such as jewelry and beauty products.

Alicia Machado. She won the title in 1996 and entered Venezuelan show business as an actress and singer. Machado's reign was marked with intrigue as she was reported to have gained too much weight during her reign. She parlayed her success into a less than stellar show business career with roles in movies and soap operas.

Dayana Mendoza. After a twelve-year drought, Mendoza won the Crown in 2008. She said that she was once kidnapped in Venezuela, giving her the mental toughness to remain poised under pressure. During her reign, she made comments regarding her visit to Guantanamo Bay that created a maelstrom of criticism for its impropriety and inaccuracy.

Stefania Fernandez. Her win in 2009 marked the first time the crown passed from one winner to another from the same country. As a result, she is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The record number of Miss Universe titleholders from Venezuela is a microcosm of the beauty of the women in Venezuela. According to reports, there is a large industry in training schools for girls specifically for beauty pageants and the mother lode, the Miss Universe title. The beautiful women clearly have it made for the next shot at the title in the coming years.
