subject: Cheney Is Certain That Israel Will Bomb Iran [print this page]

The title of this article reflects the views of former Vice President Dick Cheney with respect to the Iranian program to develop nuclear weapons and the resolve of the Israeli government to prevent it from happening. The problem is that the government of Iran has made it no secret that they wont hesitate to use nuclear weapons to attack Israel once they have developed them. The Israelis know this so they have to do whatever they can to insure that it doesnt happen. This puts them in an extremely tight situation. Assuming that they will bomb Iran if they have to doesnt require a large leap of faith.

Israel will attack Irans nuclear facilities if necessary to prevent it from developing a nuclear weapon, former Vice President Dick Cheney tells Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview. Now this is an excerpt from an article that I read. It doesnt require a rocket scientist to figure this out so there is nothing profound in this assessment.

I think they would, Cheney said when asked about the possibility. I think Iran represents an existential threat, and they'll do whatever they have to do to guarantee their survival and their security. Once again there is nothing profound here. I have been saying the same thing for months but I am not a famous politician so no one has listened to me.

Asked whether his opinion was based on discussions with Israeli leaders, Cheney responded, I cant attribute it to any one particular Israeli leader. I wouldnt want to do that. But he said, Ive had a number of conversations with a lot of Israeli officials, and I think they correctly perceive Iran as a basic threat.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has accused Cheney of taking cheap shots by saying in his book that he learned that Powell opposed the war in Iraq yet never once in any meeting did I hear him voice objection. Now I have to agree with Colin on this because it seems that just about every statement that Mr. Cheney makes these days seems designed to discredit President Obama and his policies. What is it that President Obama and Colin Powell have in common that causes Mr. Cheney to single them out for disparaging statements? Let me go on to ask you if you have ever heard a former president or vice president make a disparaging statement about a sitting Commander in Chief or any other politician for that matter. They dont do it because its unprofessional. It denigrates they high office of Commander in Chief to participate in petty activities of this kind.

I still worry more than anything else really about the possibility of a group of terrorists acquiring really deadly capabilities, Cheney said. When we got hit on 9/11 there were 19 guys armed with airline tickets and box cutters. The next time around I worry they may have a nuclear device or biological agent of some kind and would be in a position to inflict far greater damage and loss of lives than anything we experienced on 9/11. I think thats still a very real threat.

This last statement shows why it may be prudent for the United States to allow Israel to do whatever it has to do to stop Iran because it will help us also. We know that they have been arming terrorists who are fighting the United States overseas so it doesnt require a leap of faith to know that they would provide nukes to terror organizations who wouldnt hesitate to bomb the US.
