Meera Biswas was a history teacher and pioneering figure for female theatre artists in Assam. It was through her influence that Seema got the chance to meet theatre artists like Bhupen Hazarika, Phani Sarma and Bishnuprasad Rabha early in life.
The veteran actress studied Political Science at Nalbari College. Later on, she joined National School of Drama in Delhi. She joined the NSD Repertory soon after she completed her studies in NSD. Biswas debuted in 1994 with Shekhar Kapur BANDIT QUEEN (1994).
Shekhar offered her the role after watching her perform in Khubsurat Bahu, a play produced by NSD Repertory Company. The movie was based on Phoolan Devi life, who was an Indian dacoit. It was Seema biggest break in Hindi Cinema though she also worked in Assamese Cinema earlier.
The theatre rooted actress won Filmfare Best Debut Award, and National Film Sliver Lotus award for the Best Actress for the movie BANDIT QUEEN. Biswas played Flavy J. Braganza in her next release, Khamoshi: The Musical (1996). Seema played role of a deaf and mute and won Star Screen Best Actress in a Supporting Role Award.
The year saw Seema one release, Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998). She was co starred with Jaya Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Joy Sengupta, Nandita Das and Milind Gunaji. The movie deals with the life of a woman who loses her son, a Naxalite, to the violence.
Seema acted in a Marathi thriller, BINDHAAST (1999) and Shyam Benegal SAMAR (1999). She played role of Malati Karve in the Amol Palekar directed, Dhyaas Parva (2001). The movie is an Indian biopic on Raghnath Karve.
The year saw three releases of the actress. She played Tanya in Ghaav: The Wound (2002), Ranibai in Company (2002) and a psychiatrist in Deewangee (2002). She was nominated in Star Screen as Best Actress in Supporting Role for Company (2002).

She played Shakuntala in Deepa Mehta Water (2005), Sudha mother in Jayant Gillator The White Land (2005), Yashoda in Ashok Maurya Maa Where Are You (2005) and Inspector Anjali in Deepak Balraj Vij Mumbai Godfather (2005).
The actress won Genie Award for Best Performance by an actress in a Leading Role for Water. Meri Majboorii (2006), Vivaah (2006), Shoonya (2006) and Zindagi Rocks (2006) were four of Seema movies, which were released in 2006. She played Alok Nath wife in VIVAAH.
Risk (2007), Sofia (2007), Kamagata Maru (2007) and amal (2007) were her releases in the year 2007. The movies bombed at the Box Office and sank without getting noticed. Seema was seen in Shaurya: It Takes Courage To Make Right rightstriker (2008), Kahani Gudiya Ki (2008).
Seema worked in Aasma (2009), Zor Laga Ke Haiya (2009), Cooking With Stella (2009), Dujone (2009) and Yeh Meri Life Hai (2009). Seema releases are Striker (2010), City Of Gold (2010), Red Alert (2010), Hello Darling (2010). PATANG and SOCIETY are Seema two movies scheduled to be released in 2010.
