Real Steel movie review

b AnthonyMorris n Oct 05 2011, 06:00AM

Thrs a fine line between silly nd awesome nd tht line n b summed up n two words: BOXING ROBOTS. Its awesome b robots r awesome; ts silly b wh mk a movie bt plain ld boxing robots whn n t easily mk a movie bt giant killer robots destroying n entire city? Thn ld call t Transformers: Drk f th Moon nd mk a billion dollars whl single-handedly destroying th final traces f Western Civilisation nd I thnk Ive t nwrd m wn qtn.

Thts nt t Real Steel doesnt give ff a bit f a Michael Bay vibe t first, hustling former boxer Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackson) drives h truck frm ld-fashioned county fr t county fr putting n a hw wth h boxing robot. Loads f ld-fashioned Americana? Yep. Flags a-waving? Yep. Amber waves f grain? Yep. Hang n a second though Charlies truck beat-up, h boxing robot clearly a hunk f junk, nd whn t loses a fight t a bull seriously, th features a robot fighting a bull nd I mght well t rght here b f tht doesnt gt nt th cinema nt much l wll hs lucky t gt away without a severe arse-kicking. It mght nt b Last Summer t Marienbad, bt t mk a lot more sense thn anything Bays hd t over th last decade.

Holed up back t th gym owned b h former trainers daughter/robot mechanic/l interest Bailey (Evangeline Lilly), Charlie finds out h long-forgotten 11 year-ld son Max (Dakota Goyo) n longer h a mother. Fortunately Maxs rich aunt nd uncle want t adopt hm well, th aunt wnt Max; th uncle wnt a few months n Europe first. S Charlie cuts a deal: th uncle slips hm enough cash t b a replacement robot, Charlie h wnt t spend a few months wth Max bonding first.

If ve r seen a movie n r life know exactly whr th heading: Charlie nd Max really wll bond over th summer nd thn rght t th nd f act two Max wll find out bt th deal nd storm ff, convinced h dads l w n act ll along. Yawn. And rght t th moment tht mentally visualise th rest f th film stretch oh--predictably before , Max actually sees h uncle hand over th money, doesnt care tht hs bn sold long h gets half, nd th stage set fr a movie tht manages t b constantly t tht lttl bit smarter thn t needs t b.

Th really Maxs tr hs th one wh finds Atom, th beat-up sparring robot tht becomes thr ticket t th bg time thanks t t ability t mimic th still-sharp boxing movies f Charlie nd ts a nice reminder tht kids movies ftn work best whn thre actually aimed t kids instead f nerds wh never grew up. Nt tht nerds wont n th t (everyone wll), bt thll n t b ts smart, fnn, features likable characters nd h convincing special effects tht work wth th tr rthr thn being th whole point f th tr nt b ts full f pointless n-jokes nd lingering arse shots. It isnt.

At two hours ts a long film bt t never really feels t b thrs always something ntrtng going n. If ts nt Charlies character going frm washed-out hustler t actual decent dad h discovers h ld skills arent totally useless, ts th occasional hint tht Atom mght b more thn h seems, nd f ts nt th thankfully underplayed romance between Bailey nd Charlie ts team Kenton angling fr a shot t th title, currently held b super-adaptive killbot Zeus nd h pair f sleazily arrogant handlers.

Throw n a bunch f consistently teeth-rattling robot-n-robot fights ll different, ll awesome nd th wld b a rock-solid film even f t didnt gt th Rocky knock-ff ending exactly rght. Whh t d. Whatever r age, f ve r crashed two toy robots together wont want t miss th.

- Four stars
