subject: Cpap: A Relief For Breathing Disorders [print this page]

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or cpap is a device initially crafted for the treatment of breathing disorders especially during sleep. When a person finds it difficult to follow regular breathing patterns, a cpap is installed to produce a stream of air that supplies the required amount of oxygen for the body to function well. The air released from this equipment is slightly pressurized to regulate the breathing cycle of the person and prevent episodes of blocked breathing during sleep.

Also referred to as the cpap or the Nasal Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure, the cpap can be used by people with sleep apnea. Victims of breathing disorders testify for positive results after using the device. They elaborated positive effects by mentioning how the instrument made them attain normal sleep patterns, better mood, lesser instances of anxiety and depression, better concentration and memory, enhanced alertness, and productivity at work.

But cpap may not always be advantageous because there are certain implications to the user. Like any other technological breakthroughs, cpap also falls in the middle of being a boon or a bane to mans life. Patients who settle for the machines use usually complain about eye irritation, upper respiratory infections, claustrophobia, nosebleeds, muscle discomfort around the chest and sores and irritation over the bridge of the nose. These complaints, however, can possibly be avoided through the use of a mask.

The machine has great physical features a mask that fits over the nose to avoid undesirable side effects of the equipment, a tube that connects the said mask into the cpap instrument, and finally, the machine which produces the stream of pressurized air into the body. It usually weighs five pounds to ensure a space on top of the beds side table.

Given the advantages and the disadvantages of the machine, it is undeniable that cpap is actually a blessing to humanity especially for those who can no longer deal with sleep apnea and other breathing disorders. However, no matter how advantageous this machine could be, it would be unwise to manipulate it on your own without the guidance of the experts.
