subject: How Important Is A Name? When It Comes To Internet Domain Names, Choosing The Right Name Can Be Vita [print this page]

Is it important to choose the right name? As you probably know, when we talk about internet domains, of course it is. There are several things we should consider when looking for that ideal name, keeping in mind before beginning that the chances are that your perfect domain name won't be available! There are a huge quantity of website names on the internet, and the really short focused names have been taken long ago. There are also other factors guiding your decision, the most relevant is the nature of your activity - will you rely on the internet for your main income, or do you for the most part have local customers for your product or service?

This consideration is vital, because it changes the level of importance attached to your choice of domain name. For an internet-based activity, the the perfect situation is to be found on Google when people search for a keyword with high traffic. If you are concentrating on local clientele, then both the name of your domain, and your marketing strategy, will be dissimilar, and so will the domain name suggestion. If you are offering 'guitars', lets say, it's certain that you will not find a domain name to match this highly competitive keyword, because this is what we need to do - purchase a domain name that is precisely the same as a keyword that searchers are searching for. The more broadly focused the keyword, then the more competitive and also the less possibility of purchasing a reasonably priced domain name for that keyword. So what can we do to find that elusive name?

The solution is by looking for a long-tailed keyword, which normally has more than two words, but has a reasonable Google search volume. Our broad keyword 'guitar' is far too general, and a search on Google will show several million pages, and so it's far too competitive.

Now lets focus on ' steel blues guitars ', lets say, then there won't be so much competition. Not only would there be less competition, but the chances of purchasing a domain name to match precisely that long-tail keyword phrase are now quite good. This is important of Google, but no-one knows what weighting the program to this element.

It appears advisable that your domain name needs to exactly match a good key word phrase to have any chance of winning, specially if your on-page Search Engine Optimization (SEO) also focuses on the keyword. For a local business, the problem is not as tough, as you only need to get people within a certain physical radius to find you, and the tactics are different.
