The city got the name Murud Janjira after its famous fort Janjira. The word Janjira is derived from the Arabic word Jazeera that means an island. It is situated in the district of Raigad in Maharashtra. The fort is situated in the deep sea waters of The Arabian Sea and is approximately 3 kilometers from the city. It is built on a single, oval-shaped rock and is considered to be the strongest Indian fort. This 40-feet high fort was built by the Siddis in the 12th century. History says that the fort due to its special construction was never taken over by the enemies. Even Marathas failed to conquer it after many attempts.
