subject: 8 Bad Habits That Give You Neck Pain And Stifle Your Sleep [print this page]

Bad habits are a sad part of life, and a lot of them can cause some serious problems such as neck pain. Here are some of the most common bad habits that often lead to neck pain:

Bad Habit #1: Poor Posture

Many people spend most of their day sitting in front of the computer or an office desk. Others spend a lot of time watching TV. The problem is that most of us have a tendency to slouch when we remain seated for a prolonged period. This kind of sitting position puts your spine in an unnatural and unhealthy alignment, which contributes a great deal to neck pain and other physical problems.

Bad Habit #2: Wrong Lifting Technique

It is very easy to overlook bad habits when lifting, which is why many cases of back and neck pain are caused by improper lifting techniques. Remember that the act of lifting puts a lot of pressure on your muscles, joints, and spine. Therefore, you have to make sure that you lift properly. Besides, even the slightest error in lifting can cause some serious injuries.

Bad Habit #3: Sitting for Too Long

There is about 40% more pressure on your spine when you are seated than when you are standing. For this reason, sitting for too long can lead to back and neck pain, especially when you are seated with poor posture. Besides, our body wasnt designed to stay in one position for too long, so you would do well to move around every hour or so.

Bad Habit #4: Lack of Exercise

Exercise is very important for the prevention and treatment of neck pain and any other type of muscle pain. It helps strengthen your muscles, thus ensuring that it can hold up to whatever pressure you subject it to. Exercise also keeps your muscles limber and prevents stiffness and other factors that lead to neck pain.

Bad Habit #5: Sleeping on Your Stomach

This is the worst possible position to sleep in because it puts pressure both on your stomach and your spine. If you sleep in this position, then you should stop wondering why you wake up with neck pain and stiff muscles almost every day.

Bad Habit #6: Unhealthy Eating Habits

Unhealthy food choices can clog your arteries and deprive you of the necessary nutrients that keep your bones and muscles strong. This often leads to muscle injury which, in turn, leads to chronic back and neck pain.

Bad Habit #7: Smoking and Drinking

Vices like smoking and drinking both contribute a lot to back and neck pain. Although medical science is still in the process of pinpointing exactly why and how they cause such physical problems, the correlation is already too strong to ignore.

Bad Habit #8: Avoiding the Doctor

People have a lot of reasons or excuses, as the case may be for avoiding the doctor. The problem with this is that it keeps them away from learning what habits they need to break in order to avoid problems such as neck pain.
