Actually there are two options there. One is called WordPress.com and the other is WordPress.org. The dot com site allows you to set up a free blog, and it does much of the formatting for you. The dot org site gives you the tools to set up your own website, and you can even include a page that will act as a blog too.
My preference is the dot org site because you have more control over it. The other one has many rules that you must follow.
The WordPress.org site allows you to click in and start making pages right away. You can learn from that trial and error, but an even better option is to get some training on how to set up those sites.
So, yes, you can make money with WordPress, and the dot org site is an especially good choice.
