Nintendo seems to have abandoned its Personal Trainer series of self-help software, but America's Test Kitchen: Let's Get Cooking is, for all intents and purposes, more Personal Trainer: Cooking. This is an interactive cookbook that will walk you through the steps of 300 new recipes that weren't in Cooking. While it borrows the name of the "America's Test Kitchen" TV show, this was likely just to piggy back on its brand recognition because this software doesn't have much to do with it and host Christopher Kimball is nowhere to be found. The interface and voice that walks you through recipes are identical to Personal Trainer: Cooking. Those aren't complaints, though: this is another fantastic value that comes highly recommended to anyone who could use some help in the kitchen.
America's Test Kitchen is designed to be a cooking tool the whole family can use. Each member of the household can create a profile and recipe steps can be divided among several people. The software notes each person's age and won't assign the potato chopping to a five-year old.
Once you've selected a recipe you have two options for navigation: touch screen or voice command. Both options work well so it's really just a matter of personal preference. A chef's voice will speak each step to you and the speed of his reading can be adjusted in the Settings menu. While preparing a recipe you'll encounter helpful tips and tutorial videos that will go into more detail for a particular step. There are a lot of nice little bells and whistles like that, making this one of the best cookbooks around.
I'm not a good cook, but I can follow directions and use the DS. With America's Test Kitchen: Let's Get Cooking I've successfully made bruschetta, black bean salad, and beef goulash, and they all tasted great. Twenty bucks is a cool price for 300 recipes complete with video tutorials. The traditional cookbook seems quaint in comparison.
