Ameesha is the granddaughter of freedom fighter and lawyer, barrister rajni patel, who was the congress pradesh committee president of bombay.Ameesha did her schooling from the cathedral and john connon high school in bombay and was head girl for the academic year 1992 to 1993.
Later she went to the usa, and obtained a degree in economics from tufts university in medford, massachusetts. After graduation, ameesha worked as an economic analyst at khandwala securities limited, a finance company. She was also offered a job from morgan stanley, but she refused it.
Ameesha then joined satyadev dubey theatre group. She acted in many plays, including the urdu language play neelam, directed by tanveer khan. She also started modeling and appeared in commercials for bajaj sevashram, fair & lovely, cadburys jai lime, fem and lux.
Ameesha made her debut in bollywood with rakesh roshan kaho naa pyaar hai (2000), opposite hrithik roshan. Rakesh roshan is ameesha father schoolmate. Ameesha was offered kaho naa pyaar hai (2000), as soon as she was done with her graduation, but she refused it at first.
Kareena kapoor replaced her then, but backed out of the project after shooting for a couple of days. Ameesha was lucky and she was offered the film for the second time, and she accepted readily.Ameesha first world tour was the roshans: hrithik live in concert (2001) with hrithik roshan. She also took part in the craze 2004 world tour along with hrithik roshan, saif ali khan and lara dutta.
In 2005, ameesha patel was seen in adnan sami world tour kuch dil se. In 2008, she was seen in karzzzz musical curtain raiser, himesh reshammiya comeback concert.
She also took part in akshay kumar christmas eve show chandni chowk to hong which was a part of a promotional campaign for kumar film chandni chowk to china (2009). In september 2004, ameesha patel appeared in an advertising campaign for peta, posing as a petrified woman in a jail cell. The campaign was made to highlight the plight of animals that are caged in zoos.
In february 2005, ameesha participated with other bollywood stars in the help! Telethon concert, to raise money for the 2004 tsunami victims. Ameesha also participated in temptations 2005 charity function in new delhi in december 2005 at the indira gandhi indoor stadium, to raise funds for the national center for promotion of employment of disabled persons (impedance), a leading disabled rights group.
In november 2006, ameesha joined an ngo called planet read, which helps people in villages to learn reading through film songs. In october 2007, ameesha patel, along with john abraham and kirron kher joined the united nations office on drugs and crime (unodc) to curb human trafficking in india.
In 1999, ameesha met director vikram bhatt, and they started dating after the release of their first film together aap mujhe achche lagne lage (2002). Ameesha family did not support this relationship. Ameesha and vikram broke up in 2008, after a five year long relationship.
Ameesha started dating londonbased businessman kanav puri in 2008. However, she broke the relationship in september 2010 to concentrate on her career. Ameesha patel also had many misunderstandings with her parents and her brother ashmit patel.
When she was still dating vikram, ameesha parents used her hard earned money for their personal use. In july 2004, patel sent a legal notice to her father for mismanaging her accounts and assets amounting to rs 120 million and demanding the money back.
However in 2009, ameesha reconciled with her family after her break up with vikram bhatt.
