It was in 1923 when Antonio Calligaris made the first "Marocca" chair, and his son Romeo followed in his footsteps. In the 1960s the company developed into a highly structured industrial operation with a growing export market which continued into the 1970s. During the 1980s a growing interest in Italian design. In the 1990s the Calligaris brand was being distributed worldwide via the company's specially approved retailers.

Today Calligaris is made up of four different companies: the headquarters based in Manzano in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in north Italy, Calligaris D.O.O. in Croatia, responsible for the supply and processing of wood, Calligaris USA and Calligaris Japan, which manage the both the North American and Japanese markets.

In 2006 Calligaris was granted the prestigious Forest certification from the FSC - Forest Stewardship Council, the international no-profit NGO promoting the ecologically and economically responsible management of the world's wood heritage in a way that is socially beneficial and respecting of the rights of workers and local populations.

Calligaris products with FSC certification use wood only from forests that are monitored and safeguarded. In 1997 Calligaris became one of the first Italian furnishing companies to obtain ISO 9001 quality certification for its entire organisation and production system.

All products and materials undergo tests to check structural resistance, fire-proofing of fabrics, coating quality, and strength and duration of glues. These tests are carried out in the in-house testing centre as well as in the Italian wood industry testing laboratory CATAS.

CATAS carries out product research and testing in collaboration with Italian and foreign organisations and institutes and is a member of EURIFI, the European association of research institutes for the wood-furniture sector.

With its two laboratories in Friuli Venezia Giulia and Lombardy, CATAS is currently Italy's leading R&D institute and testing laboratory for the wood-furniture sector.

The Calligaris HOME products are designed for today's consumers who want to furnish their homes in complete freedom, mixing colours, materials and different styles of furniture. A living design for today's homes.
