subject: How To Fix A Burn In Your Carpet [print this page] Carpets need to be carefully maintained because it is a rather expensive investment to have them installed in your home. However, though you may be diligent about vacuuming them every few days and not eating or drinking over them, accidents do happen. One of those occurrences can be a burn in your carpet. There is a much stronger possibility of this happening if you smoke in the home. The good news is, if you do happen to get a burn in your carpet, there are ways to fix it.
When you are having a new rug installed, it is important to keep some of the remnants just in case. These can be used to repair the carpet if something were to happen, such as a larger burn, where that spot of carpet can be replaced. If you do not happen to have any extra pieces, if need be, you can cut a small piece of carpeting out of an area that won't be seen, such as in a closet.
If you have a small burn, such as one from a cigarette, you will need to utilize a razor blade. Use it to rub lightly over the spot that is burned and discolored. This will remove the burned part of the carpet without destroying the sections of the carpet that is still good. After you fluff the carpet, you should not be able to see the mark anymore. If the spot is still visible, trim some fibers from the remnant, and use those to glue into the area.
If the size of the burn is larger, than you will need to do a bit more extensive repair work. Cut the burn out of the rug with the razor blade being sure to cut it into the shape of a triangle or a circle. This will make the spot much less noticeable once it is repaired. Also, when you are cutting, be extremely careful so you do not cut the cushion that lies under the carpet. Using the remnant and the piece of carpet that you have just removed as a template, cut a piece of the remnant the same size as the burned piece. Put glue into the hole where the burned carpet was, and insert the piece of remnant. Once the glue has dried thoroughly, you can brush over the spot to blend it more with the carpeting around it.
Accidentally burning your rug is just something that happens, but it can be mended. Follow the methods above and you will not be able to notice that your carpet has been burned.
