Chitrangada Singh was born on 28th March, 1982 in a Jat family in Meerut. Due to her striking resemblance to late Bollywood actress Smita Patil, Chitrangada was approached by a filmmaker for a documentary on Smita Patil.
Chitrangada studied food and nutrition at Lady Irwin College, Delhi and wanted to become a Dietitian. She did modeling assignments while doing her graduation and later got into modeling. Chitrangda began her career as a model before making the transition to the silver screen.
After completing her graduation, she entered modeling, with ads like ICICI bank and Alukkas Jewelery. Chitrangada later gradually shifted to music videos including lyricist Gulzars album Sunset Point. Hazaaron khwaishein aisi (2003) was a sensitive film focusing on the subject of emergency declared by Indira Gandhi in 1970.
Directed by Sudhir Mishra, the film starred Kay Kay Menon, Shiney Ahuja, Saurabh Shukla along with Chitrangada. She played the character of Geeta Rao hailing from a middle class South Indian extended family. Hazaaron khwahishein aisi (2003) had a poor run in theaters due to its art cinema qualities and novel film.
But it was applauded by many critics to be a masterpiece and one of the best movies of the year. Chitrangada was showered with praise for her performances. The film won the Filmfare Best Story Award.Chitrangada next starred in director Ruchi Narains KAL: Yesterday and tomorrow (2005).
The film starred Shiney Ahuja opposite chitrangada along with Murad Ali, Boman Irani and Saurabh Shukla. Chitrangada essayed the character of Bhavna Dayal. Her performance was applauded by the critics and audience alike.
After 2005, chitrangada took a break from acting till 2008. SORRY, BHAI! (2008) was her comeback film. Directed by Onir, the family drama starred Shaban Azmi, Boman irani, Sharman Joshi, Sanjay suri and chitrangada. She played the character of Aaliyah in the film.
Aaliyah is in love with Harsh (played by sanjay) but later falls for his younger scientist brother Siddharth (played by sharman), when harsh becomes career focused and ignores her. SORRY, BHAI! (2008) was appreciated by the critics for its story and powerful performances by the cast.
Chitrangada has acted in Abhay Deol production debut Basra. The film also starer Abahy Deol, nikhil Dwivedi and shahana goswami. The film is shelved as for now. She will also be seen acting in Sudhir Mishras DHRUV along with Kareena Kapoor and rahulsingh and farhan akhtar.
Chitrangada is also doing a romantic film opposite Irrfan khan, Sudhir mishra Yeh saali zindagi.Chitrangada was named by her mother, after a character in Mahabharata. She also has a brother, golfer Digvijay Singh.
Chitrangda Singh is married to golfer Jyoti Randhawa in 2001 and the couple has a son.
