subject: Organizing a Storage Unit [print this page]

Organizing self storage units are very important to maximize savings and give the customer the most value. When renting a storage unit, people often do not consider this. Often times, people will instead rent a larger size than they really need. There are several things you can do to maximize your storage space. The first is planning your space. This means visualizing the space prior to placing your boxes and furniture to insure maximum fit. Another thing you can do is build yourself a path to the back of the unit. This is often overlooked because some people consider this a waste of space. This is a misconception. Having a path all the way to the back of unit provides the customer an opportunity to always obtain something from their unit in a quick fashion thereby preventing the need to remove everything from storage then put it back in storage.

The next thing you can do to maximize your storage space is to stack items vertically. This is probably the single most important thing you can do in a storage unit. When stacking vertically it is really important to stack heavy things at the bottom and things you will not use at the bottom. Alternatively, if you will need access to the bottom of the storage unit, use shelving. Shelving is a very cost effective way to provide quick access to belongings at all heights of the storage unit. A great way to think vertically is to stack furniture on its end. The final way to maximize value in a storage unit is to only store items that belong in a storage unit. Certain items simply never belong in a storage unit. These items include food, perishables, open containers of liquids, paints, and things of irreplaceable value. These items should never belong in a storage unit. Questions regarding what should or should not belong in a storage unit can should be asked to the facility manager. A good manager will graciously provide additional storage tips also.
