subject: How Is it Best to Start treating Autism? [print this page]

As the parent of a child who is autistic you are probably looking for the best treatments for your child. Autism is a complicated condition--there are experts who disagree about the best course of treatment. Every person is different and this means that every case of autism is unique--finding the right treatment depends on the individual's needs. This article will go over just a few of the different autism treatments that are effective.

Communication therapy is just one type of treatment for autism. Difficulty with language and communication is one of the most common symptoms of autism, so teaching autistic children basic skills in this area is often a challenge. There are lots of therapies that are practiced here and they are usually more effective and successful than other forms of therapy. Speech therapy is used a lot of the time because people with autism have a hard time both with speaking and understanding other peoples' speech. This also helps people with autism understand and interpret things like body language and a variety of gestures which they would usually have trouble with. It is a fact that autistic people communicate differently than non-autistic people but communication therapy can help the autistic person merge both of those worlds together into a single workable reality.

Although a majority of expert say that autism cannot be cured, there is at least one program that says it can teach autistic people to live regular lives. This is called the Son-Rise program, which uses a ton of creative ways to teach autistic kids how to learn and interact with people. This program takes a very positive approach, and starts off with the belief that all children, no matter how they start out, have the potential to be happy and normal. This is a very unpopular outlook because many experts that a majority of the programs out there can only monitor the symptoms of autism. The Son-Rise program has a lot of good things about it, but it is very taxing on the time and money when it comes to parents, which in itself makes it useless for many people. However, it might hold the clue for how to treat autism.

Children dealing with autism are usually put into special education classes or schools geared to dealing with this condition. This allows the entire program to be based on the needs of autistic children. How high functioning the children are will require each program to be specialized based on such factors. There are more of these programs available because this condition is becoming better understood as more children are diagnosed with it. Because they don't generally respond to traditional teaching methods and are bullied by the other students, autistic children don't fare will in regular classrooms.

The remedies for autism that were explained above, and in all of these circumstances there are professionals who pronounce they work and others who say they don't. Hopefully, in the near future autism will be better understood and some universally agreed upon treatments will be developed. Hitherto, until the present time, people have had to use discretion when testing out the curing methods available and find out which ones work ideally for their children.
