subject: How to Hang a Door [print this page]

If like me you begrudge paying for jobs that you are pretty sure you could do yourself, then simple jobs are pretty easy if you just follow the steps.

If you want to considerably jazz up a room without doing too much decorating, then a great idea is to hang a new door. If doors are heavy or mainly glass, it may be best to leave them to a professional of you are not confident. If not, follow the steps below.

You will need a few tools, and a relatively good skill level, but you will firstly need to remove the old door. Put wooden wedges underneath and unscrew at the hinges. Loosen rusty screws by tapping them gently with a mallet, and take out the last screw while supporting the door.

Put the new door against the frame to check for fit, ideally there should be a two millimetre gap around the door so that it will open and close. If there is thick carpet add another 5- 10mm to the bottom so the door goes over the carpet. Once this is done, fit the hinges to the frame, cutting out the water wood with a chisel.

Screw each hinge to the door frame and fold open. Prop the door on the frame and mark the top and bottom of the hinge on the face of the door.

Put the new door on wedges, and fix the hinge flaps to the door frame, again only with one screw. Screw the door in fully and your done!

Make sure that you have a comprehensive a Home Insurance policy in case anything goes wrong!
