The Nokia N8 is one of the newest smartphones to hit the shelves; it has a very high spec camera and is capable of connecting to the mobile internet. The N8 has an integrated 16GB memory with the option of upgrades reaching 32GB via microSD card. Nokia have also loaded the phone up GPS, Bluetooth and a USB connection.

Despite the phone not being the slimmest it still feels comfortable to handle while being pocket friendly. The 3.5 inch AMOLED display is capable of showing off over 16M colours in a 360 x 640 pixel arrangement. As standard the N8 utilises the capacitive multi-touch input method meaning there is support for pinch and zoom, the touch screen technology is very receptive and the high clarity on-screen imagery looks gorgeous and vibrant.

Boasting the new Symbian ^3 OS the interface on the N8 is a vast improvement from previous Nokia smartphones. The home screen can be customized to feature live news feeds and your social networks are integrated into the phonebook application.

The N8 is very well connected and proof of this can be found in the spec list; the various connection include cellular network coverage via Class 33 EGDE/GPRS, 3G network coverage with HSDPA, 10.2Mbps and HSUPA, 2.0Mbps. The device also utilises Wi Fi for high speed connections via local wireless hotspots, such as airports and selected cafe/bistro.

Nokia have ensured the browser supports multi touch, there are ample facilities for saving bookmarks and content like videos and photos can be uploaded thanks to the phones compatibility with sites like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.

Messaging fans will be pleased to find support for e-mail, IM and basic SMS and MMS formats. You get all the big names including Gmail and Gtalk, Hotmail and Windows Live, Yahoo! Chat and Yahoo! Mail. The screen has an in-built accelerometer which flips the UI when switching to landscape mode, this opens up an on-screen QWERTY keyboard which delivers its services for an optimized messaging experience.

The 12MP digital camera is pretty extreme, it has been equipped with Xenon flash and auto-focus, and thanks to the Carl Zeiss optics the end product is full of high clarity imagery. HD videos can be captured and shared with friends thanks to the phones HDMI connection allowing for playback on the big screen.

The Nokia N8 is loaded up with a music player and a video player; both are capable of playing multiple file types in there respective fields, a 3.5mm jack lets users plug in there headphones and the phones Bluetooth technology allows it to communicate with compatible hardware wirelessly.

With the Finnish firm falling of the pace a little over the years, the likes of Samsung and Sony Ericsson have excelled in the smartphone field without a hint of a comeback, but finally Nokia have an answer to all of our questions with the recent release of the N8. The new Nokia smartphone is the first to feature the new Symbian ^3 OS and with an impressive spec list the device will prove to be a popular handset come the end of the year.
