According to the 2001 census the population in Kidderminster was 55,182. The River Stour and the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal both flow through Kidderminster town centre.
In 1785 the Brintons founded the carpet industry; it became extremely important to the local economy, so much so that the local newspaper is still called The Shuttle after the shuttles used on carpet looms.
With the opening of the commercial retail area of "Weaver's Wharf" in March 2004, the town centre area has been substantially redeveloped to include Ford in Birmingham. Big retail brands opened shop in Kidderminster, including Next, TK Maxx and Marks and Spencer.
Formed in 1886, Kidderminster Harriers F.C. is the town's professional football club. Local rivals of the Harriers are traditionally Worcester City and Bromsgrove Rovers, and in recent years also Cheltenham Town and Hereford United. As of 2009 both Cheltenham and Hereford are in divisions above Kidderminster.
