subject: Five Ways to Help Your Child Stay Healthy [print this page]

Childhood obesity is a real problem with a number of government initiatives underway to help children stay fit and healthy. However, if you're looking for some simple steps that are easy to implement that will encourage your little one to be fit and healthy, then here are five of the best.

1. INTRODUCE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES TO THEIR DIET

Eating fruit and vegetables may not be every child's first choice, but what they eat now could have a very real impact on how they eat for the rest of their lives. The trick is starting early and introducing them slowly.

2. CHANGE YOUR OWN LIFESTYLE

It's a fact of life that children get many habits, good and bad, by watching their parents. By eating healthier, getting active and avoiding slobbing in front of the TV, they will follow your good behaviour.

3. LIMIT THEIR TV AND COMPUTER TIME

One of the main reasons why this generation's children aren't as fit and healthy of those of yesteryear is because of the amount of distractions that exist within the household. By limiting their use of TV and computers, particularly at at early age, you will be encouraging them to try outdoor pursuits.

4. FIND THE SPORT THAT FITS

Bring a professional football may be many children's dream, but others will find that sports won't come as naturally. Forcing them to take part in something they like is unlikely to do much good, but opening their eyes to other activities, such as swimming or judo, they might find something the like.

5. TAKE THEM TO A FITNESS CLUB

Gyms and health centres aren't just for adults. Nowadays, many of them have excellent facilities for children to enjoy exercise and get fit and healthy in a safe environment. Why not begin by discovering a children's gym or kids fitness club near where you live?
