Moviegoers' taste is now well seasoned with movies using 3D technology, that film makers are immediately assured of huge profits in the box office for every 3D movie that they release. Although the technology has been around since the 1950s, it took several decades before 3D movies became accepted as an innovative method of film making.

It looks like 3D films are here to stay, and so it will be interesting to know how they work.

How 3D Movies Work

You would notice that theaters charge more for 3D films than regular ones, mainly because theaters have to put in special equipment in order to present a 3D movie. Special IMAX theaters are usually the only ones that can present 3D films, because not all theaters are equipped with the equipment needed.

The technology allows 2 images of the same scene to be superimposed with each other, in order to create an illusion of depth. Moviegoers are given special glasses with filters to help them perceive these two perspectives as one complete image with depth.

Of course, there is no way that the movie screen would do the integrating of the images for you. It is your brain which analyzes the two images instantly and perceive them as a three dimensional object. The main principle used here is the polarization of light waves. With the use of polarized glasses, two images are formed, one for each eye, and the brain processes these images. The brain then integrates them together and you immediately get a 3D perception.

That's a cool way to get your brain moving while watching a great movie!

Most Loved 3D Movies

3D Star Wars

It was "Avatar" that whetted the appetite of moviegoers for more 3D films. Shown in December 2009, with massive pre-selling and advertising campaigns, the movie was a bestseller and became the standard for 3D movies that followed the trend. More movies such as "How To Train Your Dragon", "Shrek 4", "Alice in Wonderland", "Bolt" were produced and created sensational success in the box office.

Today, there are talks about 3D Bluray movies coming out, which will allow film lovers to watch their favorite 3D movies not just in theaters but also at home. Major home theater manufacturers, such as Sony, Samsung and Panasonic, have already started investing on new technology in order to make their new home entertainment packages compatible with 3D movies. It would surely give movie lovers a more entertaining experience if they can watch 3D films at the comfort of their homes.

3D films are no longer just a passing fad. It has set the trend for more innovative film making which uses advanced technology to satisfy the demand for more realistic films.
