Suffolk County was originally founded by early settlers who came from the county of Suffolk in England. Along with Nassau County, Suffolk County combines to form Long Island proper. It is located on the eastern portion of the island and is the easternmost county in the state of New York.

Suffolk County enjoys a very low crime rate and is considered one of the safest counties in the nation. The population of Suffolk County is largely upper class and is considered one of the wealthiest counties in the United States.

Important Suffolk County Characteristics

Suffolk County was established in 1683 and is notable for being one of the original twelve counties of New York. The county made its reputation on its agricultural industry and that reputation stands today. Even amidst extensive development, it's temperate climate, good soil, clean water, and dedicated farmers continue to make Suffolk County a state agricultural leader. The county is the second largest by area in New York, 912 square miles of which is land and the rest water.

Jaiyne's Hill located in the West Hills of Suffolk County is the highest point on Long Island. The North Fork and South Fork peninsulas form the eastern end of the island. The Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound surround the county on three sides. Large bays dominate the eastern end of the island. Ten towns make up Suffolk County and they are East Hampton, Riverhead, Smithtown, Huntington, Babylon, Southampton, Islip, Southold, Brookhaven, and Shelter Island.

The 2000 census declared there to be 1,419,369 people and 469,299 households living in Suffolk County with the average household size being 2.96. The household median income was $84,767 and is the 21st most populous county in the U.S.

Popular Suffolk County Highlights

There are many colleges and universities in Suffolk County. Some of the most notable are the State University of New York Stony Brook, Farmingdale State College, and Long Island University. Newspapers like Newsday and The Times Beacon have headquarters in the county.

The Supreme Court makes its home in Suffolk County, namely in the town of Riverhead where it has held court since 1729. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States and has total jurisdiction over all cases.

The Suffolk seashore features sandy beaches and glassy water with moderate waves. Lighthouses are setup near the shoreline. In fact, there are more lighthouses in Suffolk County than in any other county in the United States, one of the most prominent being the Fire Island Lighthouse, which helped in escorting European immigrant ships on their way into New York Harbor. Gardiners Island, just off of eastern Suffolk, is one of the largest privately owned islands in the world.
