subject: Salt Chlorine Generators for Pools and Spa Pose Health Risk [print this page]

There are many health related issues caused by using Chlorine and Salt/Chlorine Generators currently used to sanitize pools and spas. One major issue, often ignored, is the danger to bathers with high stroke risk, circulatory issues and heart problems.

The human body is like a sponge. When you put on lotion for example it is absorbed by the skin. Doctors often prescribe topical medicine. The same process occurs when a person is in water. They absorb whatever is in the water through their skin into the body.

Chlorine is designated by the EPA as a pesticide. Often times cyanuric acid is added to chlorine in order to make it last longer. Salt/Chlorine generators produce a corrosive form of chlorine which causes damage to pool covers, water features and equipment.

When a human enters the water with the above chemicals, they absorb them. For people who are on salt restricted diets, the 3000 to 6000 ppm of salt in a pool or spa with a salt system can be putting themselves at risk. Doctors have advised people with in home water softeners to avoid showering or bathing more than 10 minutes due to the salt content. Home softeners use salt at a rate of only 200-400 ppm. Compare that to the higher number of a pool and spa and it is obvious why it would be a danger.

A person can consume salt by putting it on their food or by being in a pool/spa with salt. In either circumstance, it is dangerous for individuals on a salt restricted or no salt diet.

There is an alternative to salt and chlorine that is safe for people, safe for the environment and saves the pool owner money. That healthy alternative is Ionization, which will soon replace both chlorine and salt as the predominant method of water sanitation.
